Summary Of Project:

DKM is one of a core network of organisations in the world using and developing Systematic Conservation Planning (SCP) to ensure that conservation of biodiversity and sustainable use of natural resources can be integrated into mainstream procedures and everyday life. Through its regular contact with groups and scientists in the SCP network, DKM was able to involve leading scientists in a unique workshop to discuss and share experiences of developing major new SCP tools.

Workshop participants included: Robert Pressey (Australia –James Cook University); Michael Jennings (USA – The Nature Conservancy); Belinda Reyers (South Africa – CSIR, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research), Taghi Farvar (Iran – Head of IUCN’s Commission on Environment, Economy, Social Politics); Grazia Borrini-Feyerabend (Italy – Vice Chair of IUCN’s Commission on Environment, Economy, Social Politics and the World Commission on Protected Areas). Issues discussed during the workshop included integrating evolutionary and ecological processes into SCP methodology, identifying and using environmental surrogates, and how to integrate socio-economic features into SCP.

The proceedings of the workshop were shared with the Republic of Turkey’s Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs personnel through a second, two day workshop. This exchange of information was critical to improving both the technical knowledge of the Ministry and their understanding of SCP studies in Turkey.
