Every year, 16 October, the founding day of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), is celebrated as World Food Day. The first World Food Day was organised in 1979.
On World Food Day, important issues related to food production, distribution and consumption around the world were brought to the agenda. Finding solutions to the problems of hunger, malnutrition and food security, supporting agriculture and promoting sustainable food production were encouraged. This special day is intended to contribute to the solution of these important issues by creating cooperation and awareness among non-governmental organisations, governments, business and individuals.
Each year, a new theme is chosen for World Food Day that will shed light on various aspects of food security and nutrition. These themes, ranging from "Climate Change and Hunger" to "Sustainable Food Systems", address pressing issues that affect not only the present but also the future of food production and consumption. The theme for 2023 is "Water is Life, Water is Food. Leave No One Behind". This theme emphasised the critical role of water for life on earth and that water is the basis of our food. It was also aimed to raise global awareness on the importance of wise management of water while rapid population growth, economic development, urbanisation and climate change threaten our water resources.
In cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Türkiye and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), "Water is Life, Water is Food. Leave No One Behind" themed World Food Day Main Event was organised. During the event, the Nature Conservation Centre (DKM) was presented a plaque by Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı and FAO Türkiye Representative and Central Asia Subregional Coordinator Viorel Gutu for its work on "Water Protection".
