Biodiversity
Biodiversity is the main focus of classic Nature Conservation. It is interesting to reflect that, despite the fact that ‘biodiversity’ as a concept wasn’t given a name until the 1980s, today there is wide public awareness of the topic and it is a word used commonly by both the general public and professional organisations.
Under the biodiversity theme, DKM focuses on species and ecosystems. It identifies the internal dynamics of how species and ecosystems function and the external factors which shape these dynamics. Using this information it then designs interventions which aim to ensure the continuity of ecological and evolutionary processes.
Maintenance of traditional grazing patterns in order to conserve the habitat of rich butterfly communities and rare species, and the conservation of the natural hydrological cycle in the oriental sweetgum forests are examples of the work DKM carries out under this theme.
